London, UK (26 April 2018) — Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, has been re-elected to serve an additional one-year term as Chair of C40 Cities. Mayor Hidalgo, was re-elected by unanimous vote of the C40 Steering Committee.

Since becoming C40 Chair in December 2016, Mayor Hidalgo has provided leadership to cities to enable them to get the job done and get on a trajectory to peak emissions by 2020. Through the implementation of bold and inspiring programmes that improve citizens’ lives as well as reduce emissions, C40 Cities provides the high ambition needed to ensure a climate safe world.

C40’s Deadline 2020 Programme:

Under Mayor Hidalgo’s leadership, C40 is supporting member cities to develop and implement climate action plans in line with the Paris Agreement. To date more than 40 of C40’s 96 cities have committed to these highly ambitious yet necessary goals, demonstrating that the future is being shaped in our megacities.

C40’s Air Quality Programme and the Green and Healthy Streets Declaration:

Cleaning the air that citizens breathe is Mayor Hidalgo’s top health priority in Paris and for cities around the world. Thirteen pioneering mayors, led by Mayor Hidalgo, have now committed to the Green and Healthy Streets declaration launched in October 2017 in Paris, pledging to procure only zero-emission buses from 2025 and ensure that a major area of their city is zero emission by 2030.

C40’s Women4Climate initiative:

The Women4Climate initiative supports and empowers the next generation of young women leading climate and air quality projects in C40 cities by giving them access to mentors and tools to use to create their own climate projects in their city. By the end of 2020, this initiative will have empowered 500 climate heroes around the globe. The Women4Climate mentorship program has already been launched in Paris, Mexico City, Quito, Montreal and London, while similar schemes are under development in Vancouver and Durban. With 17 C40 mayors supporting this ground- breaking initiative, under Mayor’s Hidalgo’s tenure as Chair, the glass ceiling to leadership in the climate and political arenas is being smashed.

C40’s Reinventing Cities Competition:

The Reinventing Cities initiative a unique global architecture and urban planning competition, designed to stimulate zero-carbon development in cities across the globe. The competition brings together the best ideas to transform underutilized buildings and sites into new beacons of sustainability, innovation and resiliency. 16 cities are participating in Reinventing Cities, offering 45 unique project sites for redevelopment in a thinking locally, acting globally mindset.

Engaging the Private Sector:

Recognising that the goals of the Paris Agreement cannot be achieved without the support and leadership of the private sector, Mayor Hidalgo has ensured that C40 cities are able to engage with business leaders to accelerate climate action. The Together4Climate event held in October 2017 in Paris brought together mayors and leaders of the world’s most important and influential companies to collaborate in making our communities more sustainable and healthier.

Financing climate action

Through projects such as the C40 Cities Finance Facility and the Financing Sustainable Cities Initiative, C40 is ensuring cities have access to the finance they need to deliver on their ambitious climate agendas.

Running World Class Events:

The achievements and leadership of the world’s great cities has been repeatedly demonstrated and celebrated, since 2016, through a series of world class C40 events and campaigns. From the Women4Climate conferences in New York and Mexico City, the C40 Talks at the New York Times Headquarters, and to the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards in Chicago, C40 events have set the global climate agenda.

Extending Mayor Hidalgo’s term as C40 Chair by one year will create the space to bring all these programmes and initiatives to maturity before handing over to the next C40 Chair.

C40’s Steering Committee is made up of the mayors elected by their regional counterparts to represent the global geographic reach. Every mayor seating at the Steering Committee is a C40 Vice-Chair and upcoming elections will see new mayors joining the higher C40 decision-making assembly.

The C40 Vice-Chairs serving on the Steering Committee are:

  • Martin J Walsh, Mayor of Boston, United States;
  • Frank Jensen, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Denmark;
  • Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary General of the Executive Council of Dubai, United Arab Emirates;

  • Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles, United States;
  • Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan, Italy;
  • WonSoon Park, Mayor of Seoul, South Korea

The C40 Steering Committee will meet in person ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit taking place in San Francisco, September 13th-14th. The Summit will see leaders of cities, states and global businesses reveal innovative climate commitments. C40 will set the stage for the success of the summit at San Francisco City Hall, September 12th, 13:00 – 16:00 in the agenda setting event, Cities4Climate: The Future is Us!
