C40 Chair, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes Featured in Cities Today

This month’s issue of Cities Today – a magazine for urban planners and other city experts – featured an interview with C40 Chair, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Mayor Paes.

In the interview, Mayor Paes talks about his goals as the new chair of C40 Cities, and shares the major sustainability efforts his city has undertaken, both as part of the city’s sustainability goals and also in anticipation of the 2016 Olympics.

With respect to C40, Mayor Paes explains the importance of having an urban goal as one of the Sustainable Development Goals to be discussed at the upcoming UN Climate Summit, a diplomatic effort he has championed, bringing more than 40 other C40 mayors on board He also emphasized his vision of expanding the C40 network, including newly added Chinese cities Shenzhen and Wuhan.

In Rio, Mayor Paes’ sustainability agenda includes expanding existing and implementing new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines throughout the city designing Olympic infrastructure with their future use in mind, and restoring natural habitats.
