C40 Large Cities Climate Summit 2005

London, City Hall

3 October 2005 - 5 October 2005

A total of 18 cities from across the developed and developing world, met at City Hall to discuss how to adapt to the inevitable effects of climate change and to exercise leadership in reducing emissions in the future.

The summit, which was organised by the Mayor of London in association with ICLEI and the Climate Group and supported by BP, EDF Energy and Thames Water aimed to kick-start long-term international collaboration on the pressing issue of climate change. It featured contributors from world cities such as Sir David King, scientific advisor the UK government and Dr Jaime Lerner from Curitiba in Brazil.

A further aim was to form a coalition of large cities committed to leadership on climate change that could drive down their own emissions, act as champions and stimulate business and national government action on climate change.

Summit agenda, presentations, communique and Climate Group publication are available to download.

A communiqué was produced and presented to the COP11 and MOP1 in Montreal in December 2005.
