On Saturday, June 13, the City of Chicago Department of Environment, Global Philanthropy Partnership and the Center for Neighborhood Technology released “Chicago’s Guide to Completing an Energy Efficiency & Conservation Strategy.” This report documents lessons learned by Chicago while creating its Climate Action Plan and could help other cities and counties in the development of a long-term and sustainable energy efficiency and conservation plan. It can also assist with maximizing the opportunity for cost savings, environmental benefits, financial leverage and economic development.

Over $2.7 billion in formula grants are now available under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program with funding for the first time under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Communities and local governments applying for this grant may find Chicago’s Guide to Completing an Energy Efficiency & Conservation Strategy useful in the preparation of the application and development of a sustainable energy efficiency and conservation strategy plan. The deadline to submit applications to the U.S. Department of Energy is Thursday, June 25.

Communities are encouraged to get a head start by taking advantage of the work Chicago did and the reports posted on the Chicago Climate Action Plan website at www.chicagoclimateaction.org.

Chicago’s Guide to Completing an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy is available online at www.chicagoclimateaction.org under the “Research and Reports” link.
