In 2012, The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group continued to make impressive gains in combating the impacts of global climate change. The C40’s milestone event for the year came in June when C40 mayors from around the world gathered in Rio de Janeiro for Rio+C40 to announce aggressive emissions reductions gains and goals for the future, with C40 Cities Chair and Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg.

Today, Atlantic Cities featured a Gen/Connect interview with Dr. Rohit T. Aggarwala, special adviser to the C40 chair, in which Dr. Aggarwala breaks down why city dwellers are the most efficient users of environmental resources. He also explains how “the triple bottom line” definition of sustainability works perfectly in cities, where improvements to public health, environment and quality of life go hand in hand.
The recent Rio + C40: Mayors Taking Action on Climate Change event at Rio+20 concluded with a plenary session on the C40 Cities’ commitment to concrete actions in the fight against climate change. It was the perfect cap to an eventful day in which C40 announced new initiatives and new data on the carbon impact of city-led actions; as well as convened global cities to participate in roundtable discussions on governance issues, green growth and poverty eradication, and climate adaptation and risk assessment.
