This week marks the kickoff of the second annual National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation, to be launched in C40 member city Washington DC by Mayor Vincent Gray. The competition, sponsored by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota, will run throughout the month of April and will feature mayors across the country encouraging their residents to conserve the precious natural resource.
After an 18-month intensive public engagement process, Washington, DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray released the 'Sustainable DC Plan' last week. From creating new jobs to improving transportation options to reducing building energy use, the plan sets forth a bold vision for the District of Columbia’s future.
C40 Cities' partner organization ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability has released a fact sheet compiling U.S. local government actions for 2012, specifically relating to climate change and extreme weather adaptation.
C40 began in 2005 as a network of 18 megacities, and has since expanded to include 63 cities around the globe. To better accommodate the varying interests and capacities of its constituent cities and future members, C40 announced guidelines this October for new membership categories, which include Megacities, Innovator Cities, and Observer Cities.
